THE McBURGER FILES!!!TOP SECRET!! Some of these notes were written BEFORE the finale and are almost certainly WRONG. I am leaving them here for historical purposes. ![]() ![]() The cover, from my pause on ep 6. It is NOT blank. WHO WROTE THE CODEX?Filed Oct 07, 1997 by McBurgerMan97 The invoice in Forbidden Fruits has a signature hidden under the watermark. I think the Original Owner is not a demon but the person who made the very first wish. If that is true, Alan may be repeating someone else’s mistake. UPDATE, May 1998: ep 20 proves there were MANY owners. Scratch that. IS THE REFLECTION THE DEVIL?Filed Oct 25, 1997 by McBurgerMan97 Probably NOT. Devils tempt people, but the Reflection mostly asks questions and keeps records. Could it be the court clerk of the universe? I am 70% certain. Scott says 100% devil. THE ORIGINAL UNIVERSEFiled Nov 12, 1997 by McBurgerMan97 Daniel remembers a wedding nobody else attended. My theory: the original world still exists underneath this one, like an old television channel bleeding through when you tune the antenna. DANIEL’S MEMORIESFiled Nov 30, 1997 by McBurgerMan97 He remembers because he loved Bethany before Alan changed anything. Or maybe because he was holding the original marriage certificate when the spell happened. Both explanations fit the evidence. BLACK WATER = LOST MEMORIESFiled Dec 18, 1997 by McBurgerMan97 Freeze-frame episode seven. There are actual WORDS in the puddles. I copied some down: BOSTON, THURSDAY, FORGIVE. The water might be the things Alan cannot make disappear. WHO IS LAUGHING?Filed Jan 05, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 I think the laugh track is an audience of discarded timelines watching Alan fail. Ronnie hears them because he lives closest to the Codex. My cousin says this is a sound mixing problem. THE ORIGINAL OWNERFiled Jan 23, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 Rachel’s invoice is addressed to the Owner, not from the Owner. This could mean Alan has accidentally bought something that was never for sale. IS THE COURTHOUSE HELL?Filed Feb 10, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 The judge in the finale has no nameplate. Every door leads back into the same chamber. It looks like a courtroom because Alan understands the law better than he understands forgiveness. DID BETHANY EVER LOVE ALAN?Filed Feb 28, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 YES, at nine and again at Harvard, but that does not mean she owed him her future. I can’t believe I am typing this after defending Alan all year. IS ALAN A COPY?Filed Mar 18, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 The hospital had four Alan McBurgers and one had the wrong childhood photograph. Maybe our Alan is not the original. Maybe there never was an original. THE BURGER THEORYFiled Apr 05, 1998 by McBurgerMan97 If you turn the Codex upside down, the gold emblem looks like a hamburger. This proves the whole show is about fast food. My brother is convinced. [ALAN] ---> [CODEX] ---> [NEW WORLD]

Compare the screen captures yourself! THEORIES I WAS SPECTACULARLY WRONG ABOUT
THE THEORY NOBODY WANTS (filed Apr 1998)LawyerGirl77 on the board says Alan is basically a genderswapped “quirky Boston lawyer”. Imagine a woman with all of Alan’s habits: she hallucinates dancing mascots, keeps tabs on her ex, and treats a man marrying someone else as a crime committed against HER. We would call her a stalker. Because it’s Alan, we call it “charming”. I don’t like where this is going. UPDATE: I like it even less now.
